ING New York City Marathon
The ING New York City Marathon is the premier event of New York Road Runners and will take place on Sunday, November 7 across the five boroughs. The race attracts many world-class professional athletes, not only for the more than $600,000 in prize money, but also for the chance to excel in the media capital of the world before 2 million cheering spectators and 315 million worldwide television viewers. Crossing the finish line in Central Park is one of the greatest thrills of a lifetime as this is the largest one-day live sporting event in the world. More than 40,000 runners will take part, including Olympians and many more of the world’s best endurance athletes.
There are several weekend activities planned including 4,000 runners in the inaugural NYRR 5 on Friday, November 5 and some 15,000 runners in the Continental Airlines International Friendship Run, which will start near the United Nations at 9:00 a.m. and finish in Central Park on Saturday, November 6. On the eve of the marathon, Saturday, November 6, a celebratory fireworks display will take place at 7:30 p.m. above the finish line in Central Park at West 67th Street. The weekend will be filled with great spectating opportunities; however, there will also be some temporary road closings and parking limitations on Sunday, which are necessary to allow such a huge event to be feasible in our city.
