The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is rolling out updated residential trash container requirements, with a key change taking effect on Monday, June 1, 2026. At that time, all properties with 1–9 residential units will be required to use the official NYC Bin for trash set-out.
The NYC Bin is part of the City’s effort to reduce sidewalk trash and improve street cleanliness. It is the Department of Sanitation’s standard container for one- and two-family homes and small residential buildings, as well as for city agencies, nonprofits, houses of worship, and professional offices in residential buildings that receive DSNY collection service.
The bins may be used for trash, recycling, and composting, though only trash is required to be set out in the official bins. Compost must still be placed in sealed bins of 55 gallons or less, and recycling continues to follow DSNY guidelines. Liners are optional but may be used to help keep bins clean.
Designed specifically for the city collection, NYC Bins are available in multiple sizes to accommodate everything from single-family homes to large multi-unit residential buildings. They can be purchased at NYC Home Depot locations, ordered online for in-store pickup via homedepot.com/NYCBins, or delivered directly through DoorDash, Instacart, and Uber Eats—all at prices lower than comparable bins. Property owners and building managers are responsible for purchasing the right sizes to ensure sufficient trash capacity and maintain full compliance with DSNY requirements.
Beginning June 2026, a warning period will be in effect for properties transitioning to the NYC Bin requirement. Full enforcement of the rule will begin on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at which point failure to comply may result in fines that increase with repeated violations.

Businesses must also do their part to keep the streets clean by strictly adhering to DSNY Setout Rules for Businesses. All local businesses are required to place trash, food, and food-soiled paper inside durable bins with secure, tight-fitting lids before setting them out at the curb. These bins must be placed outside either one hour before closing or after 8:00pm, and to ensure sidewalks remain safe and clear for pedestrians, they must remove all bins from the curb by the time the business reopens.
