Film at Lincoln Center: A World of Cinema

As a cornerstone of New York’s film scene, Film at Lincoln Center (FLC) consistently delivers exceptional programming at its two theaters: the Walter Reade Theater (165 W 65th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue) and the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center (144 W 65th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue). 

This summer, dive into the globally expansive New York Asian Film Festival, running July 11–24. This 24th edition, co-presented by FLC and The New York Asian Film Foundation, is themed “Cinema as Disruption.” FLC is hosting more than 50 of the 100-plus films being featured in the festival, while additional films and screenings will take place at SVA Theatre, LOOK Cinemas W57, and the Korean Cultural Center NY. Get ready for groundbreaking and genre-defying cinema from across Asia! Then from from July 25–31, a legendary actor gets his due with “Gene Hackman: A Week with the Gene Genie.” This special retrospective celebrates Hackman’s incredible career, screening 18 of his most iconic films—including The French Connection, Bonnie and Clyde, and Unforgiven—mostly on glorious 35mm film. 

Looking ahead to August, FLC will present “Luc Moullet: Anarchy in the Alps,” from August 8–14. This tribute to a key figure of the French New Wave features a collection of his rarely screened features and shorts, many will be shown in new 4k restorations, with Moullet himself appearing at select screenings to discuss his life and work. Later in the month, FLC brings back its Scary Movies festival for the first time in five years. Scary Movies XIII runs August 15–21, with a week of international horror films ranging from chilling debuts to genre-defying thrillers. Highlights include an Opening Night screening of It Ends with a reception, plus Q&As and special guests throughout the series.

New Plaza Cinema: Independent Gems Up Close

For those who cherish independent and arthouse films in a more intimate setting, New Plaza Cinema is a true neighborhood treasure offering weekend screenings at Macaulay Honors College (35 West 67th Street between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West). Their upcoming programming includes the NYC Short Film Showcase—a bi-monthly showcase of New York City filmmakers curated by Michael Jacobsohn—on Friday, July 25, at 7:00pm. Throughout the summer, get tickets to see Rebel With a Clause (2025), a documentary about Ellen Jovin taking her pop-up grammar advice stand on a road trip across all 50 states. AMC Lincoln Square 13: Blockbuster Spectacle

When it comes to experiencing the summer’s biggest box office hits, AMC Lincoln Square 13 (1998 Broadway at W 68th Street) is the place to be. With its cutting-edge technology, including massive IMAX and immersive Dolby Cinema screens, you’re guaranteed a thrilling cinematic ride.

This summer is full of highly anticipated movies. With DC Studios’ Superman (released July 11) receiving rave reviews, you won’t want to miss this fresh take on the Man of Steel. You can also catch ongoing summer action with Jurassic World Rebirth (released July 2), the high-octane F1 The Movie (released June 27), and the thrilling Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (released May 23). Museum of Arts and Design (MAD): Unexpected Fantasy

Beyond dedicated cinemas, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) (2 Columbus Circle) sometimes surprises with unique film screenings. This August, they are celebrating fantasy classics with two special showings: The Last Unicorn on Sunday, August 3, at 2:00pm, and the visually stunning The Dark Crystal on Thursday, August 7, at 6:30pm. Summer on the Hudson: Outdoor Cinema by the River

For a quintessential New York summer experience, don’t miss Summer on the Hudson, NYC Parks’ annual outdoor arts and culture festival. Taking place throughout Riverside Park from 59th to 153rd Street, this free, season-long celebration features hundreds of public events, including live music, dance, fitness classes, and more—no registration required.

One of the festival’s most beloved traditions is the Pier I Picture Show at Pier I @ 70th Street, where moviegoers can enjoy classic and contemporary films under the stars every Wednesday at dusk. With cooler evening breezes off the Hudson and the city skyline in view, it’s a perfect way to wind down on a warm summer night. This year, a beloved Lincoln Square institution—the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts  (40 Lincoln Center Plaza)—celebrates its 60th anniversary. Since opening in 1965, this unique hybrid of library and museum has been an unparalleled resource for artists, researchers, and performing arts enthusiasts. It offers an incredible wealth of archives and materials documenting the rich history of the arts while hosting free public exhibitions and performances. Today, it stands as the world’s foremost public center for performing arts research. In recognition of its invaluable contributions, the Library recently received a prestigious Tony Honor for Excellence in Theatre at the Tony Awards ceremony this June. The 60th-anniversary celebrations are a tribute to the artists, audiences, and pivotal moments that have shaped the NYPL for the Performing Arts over the past six decades.

To commemorate this special anniversary, the Library has teamed up with Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (10 Lincoln Center Plaza) to curate Living Library: Celebrating 60 Years, a series of events including film screenings, storytimes, reading parties, dance recitals, exclusive tours of the Library, participatory workshops, play readings, a record fair, a concert, a silent disco, and more.

The Living Library kicks off on Wednesday, July 23, with a Special Edition Children’s Story Time at 11:00am and 1:00pm in David Geffen Hall (10 Lincoln Center Plaza) and continues into the night with the Library Silent Disco: Decades Party 1965-2025 at 8:00pm on the dance floor at Josie Robertson Plaza. On Friday, July 25, at 3:00pm, The 50th Anniversary of A Chorus Line: Panel Discussion will take place at the Library, celebrating the history of the groundbreaking musical and featuring original 1975 cast members Kelly Bishop, Baayork Lee, Priscilla Lopez, and Donna McKechnie as panelists. The festivies conclude on Sunday, July 27, with a dance performance of Hidden Forest by Elaine Summers at 8:00pm at Hearst Plaza (30 Lincoln Center Plaza).

Great news for Lincoln Square bookworms! The iconic Strand Book Store has officially opened its newest location at 2020 Broadway (between 69th and 70th Street), taking over the former home of Shakespeare & Co. While still undergoing some finishing touches, The Strand made the decision to open its doors this past Saturday, ensuring the neighborhood wouldn’t miss out on its beloved bookstore experience.

“We wanted to make sure that the neighborhood still had access to the services it had come to expect during the transition,” explained Kat Pongrave, a representative for The Strand. This community-first approach is also evident in the high degree of staff retention. Pongrave noted that much of Shakespeare & Co.’s staff, including long-time general manager, Karen, have stayed on and are now part of The Strand team, ensuring a familiar and friendly face for returning customers.

The Strand management is eager to become an integral part of the Lincoln Square community. In anticipation of summer vacation, they are working diligently to launch children’s programming, making the new store a family-friendly destination. And for those with four-legged companions The Strand is dog-friendly, welcoming pets to browse alongside their owners. They even offer free treats and a water dish outside for thirsty pups.

Inside, The Strand boasts a wide array of new, used, and rare books, beautifully displayed on recently redone white floor-to-ceiling bookshelves that enhance the store’s impressive natural lighting. Don’t miss their signature merchandise, either—totes, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and other literary-themed items make great souvenirs or gifts.

One question on everyone’s mind, according to Pongrave, is the café. Worry not, Lincoln Square! Pongrave assured us that The Strand plans to open a café featuring air conditioning, comfortable seating, and even special literary-themed beverages.

Attention Lincoln Square residents and property owners: Did you know that the City provides a Trust Fund that protects you from damages caused by licensed home improvement contractors? This is a valuable resource that many of our neighbors are not aware of. Read on to learn more, and remember: It is vital that you hire only licensed home improvement contractors, or you will not be protected by the Trust Fund.  

The New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) has recently updated the rules governing the Home Improvement Business Trust Fund, a vital resource for consumers and a key component of the city’s oversight of home improvement contractors. These amendments aim to enhance consumer protections while also improving the efficiency of the fund. For property owners and residents in Lincoln Square, these changes could significantly impact your home renovation projects and interactions with licensed contractors.

What is the Home Improvement Business Trust Fund?

Established by the DCWP, the Trust Fund acts as a financial safety net. It’s designed to pay outstanding awards owed to consumers and fines owed to the DCWP by licensed home improvement businesses. Essentially, if a licensed contractor you hire fails to complete work, performs substandard work, or has a judgment against them, this fund can help you recover financially.

Key Changes and What They Mean for You:

The recent amendments introduce four significant changes to the Trust Fund:

• Increased Maximum Payouts for Administrative Decisions: In cases where the DCWP intervenes due to an administrative decision, settlement, judgment, or arbitration award, the maximum amount a consumer can receive from the Trust Fund has been raised from $25,000 to $40,000. This means greater financial protection for Lincoln Square property owners facing larger losses from contractor misconduct.  
• Higher Restitution for Consumer Claims: For those who pursue restitution through the DCWP’s consumer claims process, the maximum disbursement has doubled from $10,000 to $20,000. This adjustment reflects the common amounts sought in such claims, offering more comprehensive relief for residents.
• Expanded Eligibility for Older Complaints: If you filed a complaint with the DCWP as far back as 2015, you may now be eligible to seek restitution through the consumer claims process. This change is particularly beneficial for those who might have faced challenges accessing the Department’s tribunal before it closed.
• Paused Contributions for Businesses: The Trust Fund currently holds a substantial balance of $15 million as of November 2023. Due to this healthy balance, licensed home improvement businesses are temporarily no longer required to contribute to the fund upon license renewal if the fund’s balance exceeds $2 million. This measure reduces the financial burden on contractors, which can indirectly benefit consumers by helping to stabilize the local home improvement market, while ensuring the fund remains robust enough to meet consumer needs.

What Does This Mean for Lincoln Square Property Owners and Residents?

These changes offer enhanced protection for your home improvement investments. Should you encounter issues with a licensed contractor, the increased disbursement limits mean a greater likelihood of recovering your losses. The expanded eligibility also provides an opportunity for those with older, unresolved complaints to seek restitution.

The DCWP is authorized to make these rules under various sections of the New York City Charter and Administrative Code. These amendments are a positive step towards ensuring fairness and accountability in the home improvement industry for all Lincoln Square stakeholders.

Breakfast and lunch are served at select NYC Public Schools, community pool centers, parks, and libraries. No sign-up, papers, or ID are necessary to get a meal. We are excited to announce the return of Summer Jazz Sensations for the 2025 summer season! This free 13-week-long concert series will take place every Wednesday, June 25-September 17, from noon to 1:30pm in Dante Park (Broadway & 64th Street), with rain dates on the Friday immediately following each performance. Lincoln Square BID’s celebration of sound and summer features both established and up-and-coming artists and is the perfect way to celebrate the warmer months and the vibrant arts scene in Lincoln Square. In addition to sensational jazz performances, concertgoers can take part in a gentle stretch break, where instructors from the West Side YMCA will guide them through simple techniques. Select concerts will also feature delicious refreshments for sale by our neighborhood’s renowned eateries.

This year’s lineup of talented performers, curated by saxophonist Eric Person, includes:

July 16 – McClenty Hunter Quartet
McClenty Hunter Jr. is an acclaimed jazz drummer, composer, and educator whose dynamic style and teaching have earned him accolades, including the NAACP Image Award. A Juilliard alum and longtime collaborator with jazz luminaries like Kenny Garrett and Christian McBride, he’s also released critically acclaimed albums and played major festivals worldwide. Hunter currently serves as Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Central Florida.

July 23 – Svetlana and The New York Collective
Led by dynamic vocalist Svetlana, this award-winning ensemble blends swing, jazz, and original works into energetic, joyful performances praised by The Wall Street Journal and Time Out. Their chart-topping album Night at the Movies and acclaimed live shows have made them a favorite at festivals and venues around the world, connecting with audiences through musical storytelling and top-tier musicianship.

July 30 – Trumpet Summit One: James Zollar, John Bailey & Kalí Rodríguez-Peña
This dynamic summit features three trumpet virtuosos. James Zollar, a longtime member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, brings a rich career spanning decades and genres. John Bailey, a Grammy-winning collaborator of Ray Barretto and Ray Charles, is a respected bandleader and educator. Kalí Rodríguez-Peña, a Latin Grammy–nominated Cuban trumpeter, fuses Cuban roots with jazz mastery and has performed with icons like Wynton Marsalis and Esperanza Spalding. There will be light refreshments and snacks from Le Botaniste available for purchase at this concert.   

August 6 – Carla Cook and Friends
Grammy-nominated vocalist Carla Cook delivers swinging, soulful interpretations rooted in jazz tradition but infused with gospel, R&B, classical, and country influences. A Detroit native and Juilliard faculty member, she’s recorded acclaimed albums, performed with legends like Lionel Hampton and Wynton Marsalis, and continues to inspire as both performer and educator around the world.

August 13 – Jeremy Carlstedt
Drummer and composer Jeremy Carlstedt blends jazz, rock, and experimental influences into a bold, distinctive sound. A protégé of Chico Hamilton and a mainstay of New York’s creative scene, Carlstedt has toured internationally, released multiple acclaimed solo albums, and collaborated with a wide range of artists, earning recognition as an innovative force in modern music.

August 20 – Tenor Madness: Jason Marshall and Keith Loftis
Saxophonists Jason Marshall and Keith Loftis bring powerful, soulful energy to the stage. Marshall has worked with legends like Aretha Franklin and Wynton Marsalis and released several acclaimed albums. Loftis, known for his lyrical style, has performed with artists from Ray Charles to The Baylor Project and Christian McBride. Together, they offer a dynamic celebration of jazz tradition and innovation. There will be light refreshments and snacks from Le Botaniste available for purchase at this concert.   

August 27 – Emily Braden Quartet
Emily Braden, winner of NYC’s Jazzmobile Vocal Competition and a two-time U.S. Arts Envoy, blends jazz, soul, and pop with emotional depth and vocal power. Based in Harlem, the Boise-born singer has lit up stages like Birdland and Blue Note and released her celebrated album Cannon & Sparrow in 2023.

September 3 – Person2Person: Eric Person and Houston Person
Person2Person unites saxophonists Eric Person and Houston Person in a rich blend of jazz, gospel, and blues. Eric brings decades of genre-crossing experience and twelve recordings as a leader, while Houston is a jazz legend with over 150 albums and a storied career alongside Etta Jones. Together, they create timeless, soulful music rooted in deep mutual respect.

September 10 – Lucy Yeghiazaryan Trio
Lucy Yeghiazaryan is a rising star in straight-ahead jazz, known for her rich vocals and heartfelt interpretations. Born in Armenia and raised on contraband jazz records, she immigrated to the U.S. and quickly gained recognition, performing with top jazz artists and releasing five acclaimed albums, including 2024’s Beside the Golden Door. There will be light refreshments and snacks from Le Botaniste available for purchase at this concert.   

September 17 – Bobby Harden
Bobby Harden is NYC’s soulful showman, best known as the lead singer of the Original Blues Brothers Band. With his Soul Purpose Band, he’s performed globally, opened for legends like Solomon Burke, and held court at iconic venues like Carnegie Hall. Inducted into the NY Blues Hall of Fame, Harden delivers electrifying performances filled with heart, history, and soul.

POSTPONED June 25 June 27 – Antoinette Montague Experience
Antoinette Montague is a renowned vocalist and jazz advocate known for transforming any genre into blues or jazz. A Newark native, she’s the founder of Jazz Woman to the Rescue and an active educator and board member with organizations like Jazzmobile and WBGO. With a mission to use music as a tool for empowerment, she teaches, performs, and hosts a radio show promoting artists across all stages of their careers. Her work bridges art and activism, bringing joy and justice to communities across the tri-state area and beyond. There will be light refreshments and snacks from Le Botaniste available for purchase at this concert.   

July 2 – Matt Chertkoff Trio
Guitarist Matt Chertkoff is a seasoned performer who has shared the stage with jazz greats like Jimmy Cobb and Freddy Cole and appeared on numerous recordings and international broadcasts. A seasoned performer, she’s worked with jazz icons like James Carter and Tito Puente and toured globally with groups like The Klezmatics. Her voice evokes legends like Phyllis Hyman and Nancy Wilson, bringing soulful storytelling and musical mastery to every stage she graces. There will be light refreshments and snacks from Le Botaniste available for purchase at this concert.

This June, Lincoln Square is proudly coming together to celebrate Pride Month with a colorful lineup of events, artistic tributes, and charitable efforts that uplift and honor the LGBTQ+ community. From cultural programming and creative experiences to delicious cocktails that give back, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

At the Museum of Arts and Design (2 Columbus Circle), visitors can explore OUT of the Jewelry Box, an exhibition that expands queer representation within the museum’s permanent collection. This deeply personal and powerful show features works collected and worn by Ron Porter and Joe Price over their 41-year relationship, illustrating the significance of queer identity through the lens of studio and contemporary art jewelry. The exhibit is open now.

Performing arts institutions across the neighborhood are commemorating Pride Month with special programming. On June 11, Grammy and Tony Award winner Bryan Carter will return to Dizzy’s Club (Broadway at West 60th Street) with Jazz at Pride, a powerful celebration of community and creativity. On June 20, the Metropolitan Opera (30 Lincoln Center Plaza) will host its own Pride Night at 10:00pm following a 7:30pm performance of the American Ballet Theater’s Woolf Works. Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts will spotlight LGBTQ+ artists all month as part of its Summer for the City festival. The campus will host outdoor dance nights, a vibrant visual concert and silent disco with Machine Dazzle, and a musical celebration of composer Julius Eastman—all in honor of Pride Month.

Deutsche Bank and GLSEN are teaming up to kick off NYC Pride at Pride above the Park on Wednesday, June 18 at Deutsche Bank Center (10 Columbus Circle). Attendees will hear directly from GLSEN’s Executive Director, Melanie Willingham-Jaggers and be treated to stunning views of Columbus Circle and Central Park along the NYC skyline. Tickets include food and access to a cash bar.

Lace up your sneakers and join the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project and LANDMARK WEST! on their Upper West Side With Pride Walking Tour on June 27 (postponed from June 25 due to heat). The tour will include sites of post-Stonewall protest connected to Lesbian Feminist Liberation and the Gay Activists Alliance, two leading activist groups of the 1970s. The Central Park Conservancy is also offering special Queer Central Park Tours throughout the month, inviting participants to explore the LGBTQ+ community’s dynamic history and enduring impact on New York’s most iconic green space. These 90-minute tours offer a thoughtful way to engage with the past while walking through Central Park’s most cherished sites. The New York Public Library is hosting a robust calendar of Pride programming throughout June, including author talks, panel discussions, book groups, and more. These events offer community members opportunities to reflect, learn, and engage with LGBTQ+ voices past and present.

Color Me Mine Upper West Side (177 Amsterdam Avenue at 68th Street) will host a Pride Art Night on June 26 from 6 to 9 PM. For a $25 studio fee (plus the cost of pottery), participants are invited to celebrate love, creativity, and community by painting their own ceramics. Whether you use one of the studio’s pride-themed samples for inspiration or create your own masterpiece, the evening promises to be a joyful, inclusive celebration.

Local businesses are getting involved too, with special Pride-themed collections available at Nordstrom (225 West 57th Street between Broadway and Seventh Avenue), Paper Source (10 Columbus Circle), Sephora, and Target (1863 Broadway between 61st and 62nd Street).

And of course, it wouldn’t be a Lincoln Square celebration without something delicious to sip! Lincoln Ristorante (142 West 65th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue) is partnering with 21Seeds Tequila to offer two vibrant cocktails — the Proud Paloma and Ms. Margarita — throughout June. A portion of proceeds from each cocktail sold will benefit the Stonewall Community Foundation, supporting important LGBTQ+ initiatives. Meanwhile, Rosa Mexicano (61 Columbus Avenue at West 62nd Street) is serving up The Rosa Sol, a refreshing blend of tequila, strawberries, mint, and soda. Each Rosa Sol sold will help fund The Trevor Project’s work in suicide prevention for LGBTQ+ youth. As a part of their mission to Stand For Something Good, Shake Shack (10 Columbus Circle) is teaming up with GLAAD for their Sprinkled with Pride campaign. From June 1st – 30th, make any shake extra fun with sprinkles for just just 50¢ this June, where all sprinkle proceeds directly support GLAAD.
