Blood Drives

Extell Development’s 67th Street Redevelopment (Former ABC/Disney Campus)

Extell Development is continuing its demolition work at the former ABC/Disney site (West 66th to 67th Streets). From Monday, January 19, to Sunday, February 1, the scope of work includes demolition of the existing buildings located at:

• 147 Columbus Avenue,
• 149 Columbus Avenue,
• 77 West 66th Street, and
• 47 West 66th Street.
  

Pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular routes will remain open around the construction site, per approvals from the NYC DOT. Flagmen will be deployed to construction trucking entry and exit locations. The work hours of operation are anticipated to be 7:00am to 6:00pm from Monday to Friday. Hours for Saturday, if needed, will be 9:00am to 5:00pm.

New MTA Customer Service Center

The MTA has opened a Customer Service Center at the 59th Street-Columbus Circle subway station. The booth is staffed 24/7 by New York City Transit station agents who can try to help customers with using OMNY, signing up for a Reduced-Fare program, and more. To find the Customer Service Center, enter at 58th Street and 8th Avenue.  

Voting Information for Feb. 3 Special Election 

On Tuesday, February 3, a special election will take place for Senate District 47, which includes much of the West Side from the West Village up to 100th Street, to fill the vacancy created when Brad Hoylman-Sigal was elected Manhattan Borough President. Saturday, January 24, is the deadline to register to vote online and in person, and it is the day by which the NYC Board of Elections must receive your application if you registered to vote by mail. It is also the last day to request an early mail or absentee ballot. Early voting runs from Saturday, January 24, to Sunday, February 1. Rat Academy Training 

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is hosting free Rat Academy information sessions on Monday, January 26; Wednesday, January 28; Thursday, February 5; and Monday, February 9. The sessions are intended to provide information about safe and effective methods for rat prevention in your home and community. To learn more and register for a training session, click here. 

2026 HOPE Night 

The annual Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE) Survey, a citywide survey that estimates the number of New Yorkers experiencing unsheltered homelessness, will take place on Tuesday, January 27. The HOPE survey provides data that shapes how NYC directs resources to address homelessness. You can sign up here to help canvass streets, subways, and other public spaces from 10:00pm to 4:00am on the night of January 27.

Community Update: Extell Development’s 67th Street Redevelopment (Former ABC/Disney Campus)

From Monday, December 8 to Sunday, December 21, the scope of work includes demolition of the existing buildings located at 147 Columbus Avenue, 149 Columbus Avenue, 77 West 66th Street, and 47 West 66th Street. Hauling and trucking will take place, as needed, to facilitate the removal of building elements on 66th Street and 67th Street. Pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular routes will remain open around the construction site, per approvals from the NYC DOT. Flagmen will be deployed to construction trucking entry and exit locations. The work hours of operation are anticipated to be 7:00am to 6:00pm from Monday to Friday. Hours for Saturday, if needed, will be 9:00am to 5:00pm. Activities will be limited to carting and interior work in order to limit any disruption.

West 68th Street Block Association’s Holiday Events
On Wednesday, December 17, the West 68th Street Block Association is hosting a Strolling Street Sing-Along. They will meet at 67 Wine (179 Columbus Avenue at 68th Street) at 6:00pm, and then continue down West 68th Street, singing songs for the season. They are also hosting a holiday party at Il Violino (180 Columbus Avenue at 68th Street) on Tuesday, December 16, at 8:30pm. Cybersecurity Training for Small Businesses 

The NYC Department of Small Business Services is hosting a clinic on Tuesday, December 16, at 5:00pm, to help small businesses learn about the top cyber threats during the holiday season. Sign up here for the free event, which is taking place at St. John’s University in Queens.  

Greenmarket Closed for Holidays

The Greenmarket at Richard Tucker Park (Broadway and 65th Street) will be closed on Thursday, December 25, for Christmas Day, and Thursday, January 1, for New Year’s Day. Regular market operations will resume on Saturdays from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Rewards for Catching Illegal Dumping

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is offering financial rewards for video evidence of illegal dumping of trash. Illegal dumping refers to dumping trash from a vehicle, so it is distinct from littering. If you witness someone illegally dumping trash, DSNY encourages you to take a video with a clear picture of the license plate, but not to approach or engage with the lawbreakers. MetroCard Sales Ending

MetroCard sales will end after December 31, but MetroCards can continue to be used to pay for rides into 2026. The MTA recommends that you spend down the value on your MetroCard before it expires. Remaining balances will be eligible for transfer or reimbursement for two years after the expiration date on the MetroCard. New York State’s Plastic Bag Ban

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reminds you that businesses, retailers, stores, vendors, and any others required to collect New York State sales tax are prohibited from distributing plastic carryout bags. All New York City businesses covered by the ban must charge $0.05 for each paper bag. Although all types of plastic film bags are banned by default, bulk items, prepared food, and uncooked meats are some of the items exempt from this ban. Food Assistance

The Office of the Manhattan Borough President has provided resources for people facing food insecurity from the loss of SNAP benefits due to the federal government shutdown. The Food Bank for NYC Food Map shows locations for food pantries and free meals. People using SNAP benefits will be notified about the status of their November SNAP benefits by the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) through the OTDA website, NYC ACCESS HRA, myBenefits, the ebtEDGE app, and by text. Any unused benefits will remain available after November 1—you can check your EBT balance at ebtEDGE.com or through the ebtEDGE app.

I Love the Upper West Side has published an article with information about where to find food pantries and free meals, as well as how you can volunteer to help people in the neighborhood facing food insecurity.

Mentorship for Young Women

Free weekly L.O.V.E. Mentoring sessions (Latinas On the Verge of Excellence) that are open to young women in middle or high school, and interested in mentorship, education, and leadership development, begin on Thursday, November 6, at 4:30pm. Community Update: Extell Development’s 67th Street Redevelopment (Former ABC/Disney Campus)

As everyone knows, Extell Development is currently doing demolition work at the former ABC/Disney site (West 66th to 67th Streets). The BID receives a Construction Look Ahead and will share information about road closures going forward, starting with the information below. On Saturday, November 8, from 6:00am to 6:00pm, a mobile crane will be used to lift equipment off the roof of 149 Columbus Avenue. The crane will first be positioned on Columbus Avenue between West 66th and 67th Street. The setup will still allow for one lane of vehicular traffic to flow and will not affect traffic on 66th and 67th Street. The operation will be moved by late morning to a second position on 67th Street (East of Columbus Avenue) and fully reopen Columbus Avenue. 67th Street will be closed to vehicular traffic once the crane is relocated to this second position. Parking on 67th Street will be prohibited and marked out 250 feet East of Columbus Avenue on the North and South curbs. Once the crane is demobilized, 67th Street will be reopened to vehicular traffic and parking by 6:00pm, or sooner. Flaggers may pause pedestrians for a moment for safety, if needed, or ask pedestrians to cross the street.

Mammogram Bus

On Tuesday, November 18, from 9:00am to 4:30pm, the Mammogram Bus from the American-Italian Cancer Foundation will be parked across from Council Member Gale Brewer’s District Office at 563 Columbus Ave at West 87th Street. There’s no cost—no co-pays, deductibles are waived, and uninsured patients are welcome—for NYC women between ages 40 to 79 who haven’t had a mammogram in the last 12 months. Surveys for Businesses

Food Service Leadership Training: The NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) is conducting a survey about what type of leadership training is needed for supervisors in food service businesses. To complete the survey, click here. 

Small Business Credit Survey: SBS and the Federal Reserve are partnering on the Small Business Credit Survey, which is seeking information from owners and key financial decision-makers of for-profit businesses about whether and how they use debt, what financial conditions they face, and more. The survey, which closes on Friday, November 14, is available here.

Resources for Veterans

The NYC Department of Small Business Services is hosting a resource fair for veteran and military-connected entrepreneurs on Wednesday, November 12, at 9:30am, at 1 Liberty Plaza. The fair will bring together city agencies, nonprofit service providers, lenders, and veteran-run organizations, all committed to providing resources and support to veteran-owned businesses and those owned by their immediate family members. On the last Tuesday of each month from 10:00am to 3:00pm, a Veteran Service Officer with the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be available at Council Member Gale Brewer’s District Office (563 Columbus Avenue) to assist veterans applying for VA benefits, whether disability, pension, healthcare, dependent, education, or home loans. Bring military service records and discharge form DD214; no appointment necessary.

Municipal Archives Library Book Sale

On Friday, November 7, and Saturday, November 8, from 10:00am to 4:00pm, the NYC Municipal Archives and Library will hold a book sale of items that have been removed from the library’s collections, including books about history, politics, culture, theater, art, food, and iconic landmarks. New Year’s Eve All Night Permit

Bars, taverns, restaurants, and other businesses seeking to remain open after the county closing hours on New Year’s Eve (Wednesday, December 31) must file a permit application with the State Liquor Authority by Sunday, November 16. To learn more and apply, click here.

Traffic Alerts

Alternate Side Parking Suspensions: Over the next three weeks, alternate side parking regulations will be suspended for the following holidays: Saturday, November 1 for All Saints’ Day; Tuesday, November 4 for Election Day; and Tuesday, November 11 for Veterans Day. E-Bike Speed Limit: A 15 mile-per-hour speed limit for electric bikes, e-scooters, and pedal-assist commercial bicycles on city streets goes into effect on Friday, October 24. The speed limit for stand-up e-scooters is already 15 mph. In Central Park, the speed limit for e-bikes and e-scooters is also 15 mph.

Street Closure: The NYC Department of Transportation has posted an advisory here that West 67th Street between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West will be closed to vehicles on Saturday, October 25, and Sunday, October 26, from 8:00am to 8:00pm to facilitate crane operation.

Open Streets and Street Fairs: On Sunday, October 26, from 12:00pm to 7:00pm, West 77th Street to West 68th Street along Columbus Avenue will be closed to traffic for Open Streets, hosted by the Columbus Avenue Business Improvement District. Participatory Budgeting

Participatory Budgeting is a process in which community members decide how to spend part of the capital budget allocated to their city council member. People living in District 6, which covers Lincoln Square, can suggest ideas for projects to improve the neighborhood online by Friday, November 28, or at Council Member Gale Brewer’s District Office (563 Columbus Avenue) from 10:00am to 6:00pm on weekdays.

Fire Safety

The NYC Fire Department recently celebrated the 100th annual Fire Prevention Week by promoting fire and life safety education. Visit FDNY Smart for information on smoke/carbon monoxide alarms, Halloween safety, lithium-ion batteries, and more.

On Saturday, November 1, Animal Care Centers of NYC is holding a mobile pet adoption event from 12:00pm to 4:00pm at 563 Columbus Avenue at West 87th Street. All dogs and cats will already be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, so they will be ready to be licensed and taken home. 

MTA Info

The MTA’s Fall 2025 Customers Count Survey is available to take online here through Sunday, November 2. The survey, which takes an average of 10-15 minutes to complete, is intended to help identify priority issues for riders and give the MTA a better understanding of customer needs to make improvements across the system.

The MTA announced that it is planning to open a Customer Service Center at the 59 St-Columbus Circle subway station by the end of the year. Station agents working at Customer Service Centers can assist customers with switching to OMNY, provide information about how to submit complaints and receive information on travel delays, and more. The Manhattan Borough President’s Office has prepared a back to school resource guide for families across Manhattan. The guide includes information on local organizations offering extracurricular and enrichment opportunities, college assistance, special needs services, and basic needs (healthcare, food, and childcare) assistance.

RFP for a Food Market at Columbus Circle

The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation has issued a significant Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Installation, Operation, and Maintenance of a Food Market at Columbus Circle, Central Park, Manhattan. The RFP can be found at this link (log-in required). Block Party: On Saturday, October 11, the West 68^th Street Block Association is hosting a Block Party from Amsterdam Avenue through Central Park West. From 9:00am to 6:00pm, this stretch will be closed to vehicular traffic.

West 79th Street Rotunda: From Monday, September 29 through Saturday, November 15, the NYC Department of Transportation Division of Bridges will conduct overnight operations on the West 79th Street traffic circle. The West 79th Street exit ramp from southbound Henry Hudson Parkway will be closed from 10:00pm to 5:00am, Monday through Friday, and from 12:01am to 7:00am on Saturdays for approximately six weeks. Open Streets: On Sunday, October 19 from 12:00pm to 7:00pm, West 77th Street to West 68th Street along Columbus Avenue will be closed to traffic for Open Streets, hosted by the Columbus Avenue Business Improvement District. Vaccines

The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu shot this flu season (consult with your primary care doctor). Most health insurance plans cover flu vaccination without a co-pay or other fees. Flu vaccines are widely available at doctor’s offices, pharmacies, community health clinics, and through employer-sponsored programs—vaccination sites can be found on the NYC Health Map. New Yorkers with no or limited health insurance can get low- to no cost vaccines, including at NYC Health+Hospitals sites.

COVID-19: On October 5, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul announced an extension of Executive Order 52, which allows pharmacists to continue administering COVID vaccines to New Yorkers who wish to be vaccinated. The Executive Order will be in place for at least another 30 days. More information is available here.

The NYC Office of the Comptroller’s audit bureau has extended the deadline for small businesses to take their brief survey—which covers the elimination of certain violations, lowering of civil penalties, and providing opportunities to correct first-time violations—to Friday, October 10. Responses will be kept confidential and survey results will be shared in a summary format only.

Free Trainings

Clean Buildings: The NYC Department of Sanitation is hosting a series of Clean Buildings Trainings, which are free courses intended to help New Yorkers keep buildings clean through best practices for waste management and recycling. There are separate trainings for residential maintenance staff (also available in Spanish), residents, NYC agency staff, and schools. Click here for more information and to register.

New York Road Runner Events

NYRR Race Free Program: NYRR is offering 1,000 spots for its Race Free Program in 2026, providing more than 3,000 complimentary race entries. The application period opens on Monday, October 20 at 12:00pm and closes on Monday, November 10 at 11:59pm. More information on the program and how to apply is available here.

NYC Marathon: The NYC Marathon will be taking place on Sunday, November 2. In Lincoln Square, expect crowds and traffic delays throughout the day as runners and spectators exit Central Park. The NYC Marathon course is closed to vehicular traffic during the race. The course will reopen to vehicles on a rolling basis; the schedule of bridge and street closures and re-openings will be available soon.

Traffic Alerts

Gridlock Alert Days: The NYC Department of Transportation announced that drivers should expect extensive street closures and delays across Manhattan from September 22 – September 26 due to the United Nations General Assembly. The DOT strongly encourages everyone to use non-driving modes of transportation—including the subway and bus system, ferries, cycling, and walking—especially on these days. A full list of Gridlock Alert Days (the days when traffic is expected to be at its slowest and most congested) for the remainder of the year is available here.

Repaving: On the night of Friday, September 26, the Department of Transportation will resurface the pavement on Central Park West between West 72nd Street and West 62nd Street.

Street Fairs: On Sunday, September 28, Lincoln Square Neighborhood Center is hosting a street fair on Columbus Avenue between West 66th Street and West 72nd Street. The fair will begin at 10:00am. and conclude by 6:00pm. The streets will be closed to vehicles for the duration of the event. Also on September 28, the Columbus Avenue Business Improvement District is hosting Open Streets from 12:00pm – 7:00pm from West 77th Street to West 72nd Street along Columbus Avenue.

Policy Updates

Paid Prenatal Leave: The NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection has provided a reminder that, effective January 1, 2025, all private, nonprofit, and household employers that employ workers in New York City must provide 20 hours of paid prenatal leave (in addition to the amount of safe and sick leave, whether paid or unpaid, employers must give employees). Paid prenatal leave is paid time off work that employees can use for healthcare during their pregnancy or related to their pregnancy, including fertility treatment and end of pregnancy care. To find out more information, visit the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection’s FAQ.

Illegal Vending Decriminalized: On September 10, the New York City Council voted to override Mayor Eric Adams’s veto of legislation that removes all misdemeanor criminal penalties for general vendors and mobile food vendors. As a result, vendors who operate without a license could be subject to a violation and a fine or a civil penalty and vendors who violate any other street vending laws would be subject to a civil penalty. These new rules go into effect in March 2026. The Lincoln Square BID reports illegal and unlicensed vending and will continue to do so through the appropriate channels. Violations can also be reported through 311.

Free Trainings for Lifesaving Skills

Emergency Management Webinars: For National Preparedness Month, the NYC Office of Emergency Management is hosting free virtual events on September 24 and September 30 to help community and faith-based organizations prepare for emergencies and become more resilient. The Strengthening Communication Program also offers grants to community networks to build their emergency preparedness plan and support local community resources.

CPR and Narcan Training: On Monday, September 29 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm, representatives from FDNY and Ryan Health Center are leading CPR and Narcan Training for Bystanders, which will cover proper methods to use these lifesaving techniques (note that the CPR training is compression only and non-certification). The event is taking place at Goddard Riverside (593 Columbus Avenue at West 88th Street) and space is limited. RSVP at the link.

Registration for the 2026 Five Boro Bike Tour—the annual 40-mile bike ride throughout New York City—opened on September 17. 32,000 people will participate in the event on Sunday, May 3, 2026, which is the only day of the year that cyclists can ride on the FDR Drive, Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

Global Citizen Festival

On Saturday, September 27, the annual Global Citizen Festival—a concert to unite people toward ending extreme poverty—will take place at the Great Lawn inside Central Park. Headliners for this year’s event include The Weeknd and Shakira, and Hugh Jackman will host the event. Tickets are available for purchase or can be earned for free by taking actions through the Global Citizen app.

Office of Nightlife Grant for Nonprofits

The Office of Nightlife at the NYC Department of Small Business Services is launching the FY26 Nightlife Grant for nonprofit organizations. Grants of up to $50,000 will be awarded to nonprofit organizations for projects that strengthen nightlife business vitality within NYC’s commercial corridors. Applications are due October 15, 2025.
