Botero’s Adam & Eve Stand Tall at The Shops at Columbus Circle
Sep 26, 2023Standing as gatekeepers to the mix of luxury retail and restaurants at The Shops at Columbus Circle are Adam and Eve, as you’ve likely never seen them before. The pair flank the main entryway, around 12-feet tall, chubby, and as nude as ever. Those interested in the art world will likely be able to guess the sculptor behind the works—Fernando Botero.
Botero, who passed away on September 15, 2023, was a world-renowned artist and sculptor from Medellín, Colombia. His works are recognizable, typically depicting people and animals that are bulbous and exaggerated. Made popular by this unique style and his simple subjects, his works often came with high price tags, some pieces selling for millions of dollars.
According to Wikipedia, the Adam and Eve sculptures are one of several pairs created by Botero. One Adam is installed outside of Seattle’s Federal Reserve Bank Building and is owned by property developer Martin Selig. The location of its better half is unknown. Other pairs are at the Hotel Michael in Singapore and in the gardens of the Monte Carlo Casino.
To see the sculptures for yourself, stop by The Shops at Columbus Circle Monday through Saturday from 10am until 8pm and Sundays from 11am until 7pm.
