NYC Emergency Management Issues Weather Alert for Tomorrow

The New York City Emergency Management Department has issued a weather alert for Thursday, February 6, with a winter storm expected to impact the Thursday morning commute. Snowfall is expected to begin late Wednesday evening and continue into Thursday morning, with accumulations ranging from around one inch to a possible two inches in a reasonable worst-case scenario. The snow is forecast to transition to rain Thursday morning, with a chance of a brief period of freezing rain during this changeover. Participatory Budgeting Volunteer Open House

Council Member Gale Brewer’s team is compiling proposals and planning outreach for this year’s Participatory Budgeting voting—where 6th Council District residents decide how to spend $1 million in capital funds within the district. Tomorrow, Thursday, February 6, from 5:30PM until 6:30PM, there will be a Participatory Budgeting Volunteer Open House at St. Agnes Library (444 Amsterdam Ave.). Extreme Winter Weather Preparedness

On Wednesday, February 12, from 1:00PM until 2:00PM, join FEMA's Region 2 National Preparedness Division for a comprehensive overview of winter-related hazards and their associated impacts, including but not limited to: observed and forecast snow; snowmelt and rain-on-snow; freezing rain and ice accumulation; extreme cold temperature and wind chill; and river ice and ice jam formation. The webinar will also describe National Weather Service (NWS) winter-related products, providing attendees with valuable tools and insights to enhance operational preparedness and response during winter-related incidents. Register here.

The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) application is now open! Each summer, SYEP connects young New Yorkers (ages 14-24) with paid work experience and career exploration in relevant fields. Learn more and apply here before the February 28 deadline.

Manhattan District Attorney’s High School Internship Program

High school students interested in working toward safety and justice for all should consider applying for a paid internship through the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. Applications are open now through March 12 at 5:00pm. Internships will run from June 30 through August 1. Applicants must be current high school sophomores, juniors, or seniors who reside in Manhattan. Learn more and apply.

TUMI: Temporarily Closed

TUMI, located in The Shops at Columbus Circle, is currently closed. The store will re-open in a few months with an expanded footprint. 

NYC Free Tax Prep

The IRS is officially accepting and processing 2024 tax returns! Find a checklist here of what you need to file your 2024 tax return. Families that earned $93,000 or less in 2024, and single filers with an income of $65,000 or less in 2024, can file for FREE with an IRS-certified VITA/TCE volunteer preparer. The deadline to file a tax return for your 2024 taxes is April 15, 2025. Learn more here.

Fair Fares NYC 

Fair Fares NYC is a City program created to help New Yorkers with low incomes manage their transportation costs. Using the Fair Fares NYC MetroCard, eligible New York City residents receive a 50% discount on subway and eligible bus fares. Check your eligibility and apply here.

Beware of Elder Abuse

At the NYPD 20^th Precinct Community Council Meeting on January 27, Vimi Bhatia, Deputy Chief of the Elder Abuse Unit at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, spoke about elder abuse, especially scams that target adults over the age of 60. She highlighted common phone scams, advising people not to answer calls from unknown numbers and to always verify requests for money with family members. Additionally, she cautioned to never click on suspicious links, to avoid sharing personal or banking information over e-mail, and to never allow remote access to your computer. Learn more here.

Traffic Advisories

Alternate side parking regulations will be suspended for snow removal, tomorrow, February 6. Parking meters will remain in effect. 

Alternate side parking will also be suspended on Lincoln's Birthday, Wednesday, February 12, and on Washington's Birthday/Presidents' Day, Monday, February 17.
