Find a Film to See This Fall

Fall in Lincoln Square is set to be a cinematic delight with a lineup of extraordinary film events. The Museum of Arts and Design (2 Columbus Circle) is hosting OUT at the Movies, which began on September 24 and continues through December with a different movie each month. Meanwhile, Film at Lincoln Center’s 62nd New York Film Festival (NYFF) will commence just days later on September 27 at venues throughout Lincoln Center, as well as theaters in all five boroughs.

The OUT at the Movies film series complements the Museum of Arts and Design’s (MAD) exhibition OUT of the Jewelry Box. The series focuses on the role of film in the construction of LGBTQ+ stories, reflecting the exhibition’s exploration of queer perspectives in art jewelry. The selected films echo the exhibition’s themes of queer desire, contemporary issues, and imaginative worlds. Each screening will feature a Q&A with guest speakers, such as directors, film crew, and historians.

The series began on September 24 with Wong Kar Wai’s film Happy Together (1997). October 22’s event will feature David Cronenberg’s The Fly (1986). Then, on November 19, catch a showing of Toshio Matsumoto’s Funeral Parade of Roses (1969). The series ends on December 3 with Patricia Rozema’s I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing (1987). Screenings begin at 6:30pm in the theater, with tickets priced at $10 for the general public and $5 for members. For more details and to buy tickets, visit MAD’s website.

Running from September 27 through October 14, as always, NYFF62 promises a slate of essential cinematic offerings from around the world. The Main Slate, a selection of the most exceptional new films from around the world, is the core of the program. This year’s Opening Night film is RaMell Ross’s Nickel Boys (2024), the Centerpiece selection is Pedro Almodóvar’s Room Next Door (2024), while Steve McQueen’s Blitz (2024) will be the Closing Night film of NYFF62. NYFF’s Spotlight section, which showcases some of the season’s most anticipated and significant films, will feature the U.S. premiere of Elton John: Never Too Late (2024) from R.J. Cutler and David Furnish on October 1, while the Spotlight Gala on October 6 will feature a screening of Luca Guadagnino’s Queer (2024).

Additional sections of NYFF include Currents, which emphasizes new and innovative forms and voices, and Revivals, which showcases digitally remastered, restored, and preserved films from renowned filmmakers. While already sold out (but potentially available on Standby), it is significant to note that on October 9, NYFF will feature the world premiere of Stanley Nelson’s San Juan Hill: Manhattan’s Lost Neighborhood (2024). As part of the Festival’s Talks section, there will be a conversation with director Stanley Nelson, producer Rita Coburn, and special guests following the screening. You can find everything you need to know about the festival on NYFF’s website, including the lineup, schedule, ticket information, and more.

With cinematic screenings available throughout the season, Lincoln Square is the place to be this fall for film enthusiasts. Be sure to secure your tickets before it’s too late! For more places to see films in the neighborhood, visit AMC Lincoln Square 13 (1998 Broadway at West 68th Street) and New Plaza Cinema (35 West 67th Street between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West).
