Honor Hispanic Heritage Month
Sep 24, 2024Since 1988, National Hispanic Heritage Month has been observed in the United States from September 15 to October 15, celebrating the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. The observance begins on September 15 to coincide with the independence days of several Latin American countries. While these contributions are deserving of year-round recognition, this month offers unique opportunities to honor them, especially in Lincoln Square and across the City.
At Lincoln Center, you can find a wide range of events, art forms, and genres celebrating the tremendous artistic contributions of Latine artists, performers, and arts educators. Enjoy concerts spanning genres like hip-hop, cumbia, folk, pop, salsa, and reggae; attend a Spanish-language comedy night; join a Cuban charanga social dance; participate in an artistic conversation; or catch a film. With so many options, you can appreciate the profound impact of Latine communities on the performing arts. For detailed programming, visit Lincoln Center’s website.
Support and discover Hispanic designers and Latinx-owned brands throughout the month. The Store at MAD (2 Columbus Circle) is featuring an exquisite collection of glassware, ceramics, jewelry, and more, all crafted by talented Hispanic designers. These pieces highlight the makers' rich cultural heritage and creativity. While Target (1863 Broadway at West 61st Street) and Nordstrom (225 West 57th Street at Broadway) sell products from Hispanic and Latinx-owned brands all year round, this month is the perfect time to discover which of your favorite brands are Hispanic or Latinx-owned or find brand-new ones. From clothing to homeware to beauty and wellness products, Latinx-owned brands run the gamut at Target and at Nordstrom.
The New York Public Library is hosting a variety of free events for all ages throughout the City to celebrate Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month. You can also find multilingual reading recommendations, research resources, and more on the website. For those who prefer spending time outdoors, NYC Parks is also offering several free programs in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Attend concerts, a bilingual birding event, a nature exploration hike, and more. While none of the events are in Lincoln Square, it’s a great opportunity to get out and explore the City’s parks this fall. Learn more on the NYC Parks website.
While Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to shine a spotlight and celebrate these rich contributions, remember that appreciation should extend beyond this period. Embrace the myriad ways to honor and engage with Hispanic culture and history this month and throughout the year!
