Our Work: Keeping Lincoln Square Clean

In August 2023, the New York Times published “The Dirtiest Corners of New York City.” The piece ranked zip codes based on number of complaints submitted to 311 and found that 10023—the zip code which includes most of the Lincoln Square BID—received some of the fewest sanitation-related complaints between October 23, 2021 and October 23, 2022 of any zip code in NYC. Here’s a look into how the BID keeps Lincoln Square looking so spotless!

Our Dedicated Clean Team
Lincoln Square has contracted a diligent crew of cleaners through Streetplus for over 25 years. The team of fourteen, armed with brooms, trash bins, and a variety of other tools, keep the neighborhood clean—rain or shine. You can spot them picking up trash, cleaning park tables, removing graffiti, and more, seven days a week.

Trash Bins
One hundred and ten—that’s how many trash cans are maintained by Lincoln Square BID’s trash team. In addition to the cans, some of which are sponsored by property owners, the BID has also purchased six Big Belly trash bins, four of which also receive recycling. These unique bins have pedals for trash that make them “hands-free,” as well as special metal plates on the doors where cigarettes can be put out. Within the bins, a compacting system allows them to fit even more trash!

Citibins
Always working to keep Lincoln Square as clean as possible, the BID was one of the first in the city to pilot Citibins. The 3.5-foot tall, lidded receptacles allow the BID to store full trash bags before being removed by the NYC Department of Sanitation. Now, the BID has four Citibins located along Broadway, which means more bags off the street.

Lincoln Square BID may already be considered one of the cleanest spots in the city, but we’re always considering ways to continue improving our services. Stay tuned for more updates on our cleaning and sanitation efforts!
