The Summer HD Festival Offers Opera to All

Whether you’re a regular at the opera or looking to test the waters, The Metropolitan Opera’s 2024 Summer HD Festival promises an unforgettable experience – at no cost. From August 23 through September 2, the façade of the opera house will house a giant screen used to display ten screenings from the Met’s Live in HD series, as well as a screening of the Academy Award-winning film The Red Violin, which will kick off the festival. This year’s lineup includes some of the season’s critically acclaimed new productions and beloved classics like Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking, Anthony Davis’s X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, and Bizet’s Carmen. The Summer HD Festival makes opera accessible to everyone, offering a unique opportunity to enjoy the beauty and power of this art form under the stars in one of New York City’s most beloved cultural hubs. With more than 2,500 seats available nightly and standing room available around Lincoln Center Plaza, this is a great way to soak up some of the last weeks of summer while enjoying world-class opera performances. This series brings opera to the masses in a relaxed, outdoor setting – no tickets required – just keep in mind that seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

And remember, before you snag your seats to the show, grab a meal at one of Lincoln Square’s fabulous eateries. To explore the dining options in the district, check out our Neighborhood Guide.
