Two New Citibins on Amsterdam Ave
Aug 21, 2024The Lincoln Square BID recently installed two new Citibins on Amsterdam Avenue, adding to the existing four throughout the Broadway corridor. One of the new bins is located at 21 Amsterdam Avenue at W 60th Street, and the other at 153 Amsterdam Avenue at W 67th Street, where you can stop by to see the new Citibin, then stick around for Wok City’s popular Chinese food, including a lunch special that can’t be beat!
The BID began installing Citibins in 2022 as part of the Clean Curbs Program, a collaboration between the NYC Departments of Sanitation (DSNY) and Transportation (DOT) in an effort to keep trash bags – and rats – off the City’s sidewalks. Due to the success of this program – in large part because of the great service DSNY provides by ensuring the bins are emptied in a timely manner multiple times a day – Lincoln Square now has a total of six Citibins, which can hold between 20 and 25 bags of garbage each that might otherwise pile up on the sidewalks.
For nearly 30 years, the BID has provided supplemental sanitation as well as public safety and beautification services as per the BID's District Plan and contract with the City. The BID’s Clean Team, contracted from Streetplus, works hand in hand with DSNY to improve the quality of life in Lincoln Square and keep the district’s sidewalks litter-free for New Yorkers and visitors who come to the neighborhood to shop, dine, or see a performance. Every day, our hardworking Clean Team members sweep and bag up public litter for collection by DSNY, and now, move full bags (approximately 300 per day!) out of sight, off the sidewalks, and into rodent-proof Citibins.
The timing couldn’t be more perfect as DSNY Commissioner Jessica Tisch is ramping up on her mission to keep bags off sidewalks. Back in March, DSNY updated its rules, and all businesses in NYC are now required to use bins with secure lids when setting out their trash for collection. The City is now moving towards prohibiting bags on the sidewalks altogether, including for residential buildings. You can learn more about the new rules for residential waste containerization and sign up for info sessions on DSNY's website.
Many thanks to DSNY and DOT for working with us to improve Lincoln Square's streetscape. Let us know what you think about the Citibins by emailing info@lincolnsquarebid.org.
