A Letter to City Council About Commercial Waste Zones

Legislation currently under consideration in the New York City Council proposes to establish commercial waste zones and limits each zone to one exclusive commercial waste carter. The proposed bill would eliminate competition between carters, likely leading to reduced quality of service at a higher price. As such, we have joined trade groups, community development organizations, REBNY, and many of our BID colleagues in opposing this legislation by sending a joint letter to the Council expressing our concerns. While we recognize that actions must be taken to reform the commercial waste carting in New York, we believe that limiting neighborhoods to one exclusive carter would be bad for our streetscape and our businesses’ bottom lines.
