Backstage at the Met Opera

Lincoln Square is home to some of the world’s premier performing arts organizations. This performance season, visitors to the district can experience the brilliance of one of these organizations, The Metropolitan Opera, like never before via an exclusive backstage tour.

The Metropolitan Opera has been a staple of the New York City arts scene since it first opened its doors in 1883. A new experience, “Backstage at the Opera,” allows visitors to peek behind the curtain at the world’s largest repertory opera house (fun fact: the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center is the largest repertory opera house in the world, surpassing the Sydney Opera House seating capacity by thousands of occupants!).

This special access tour includes visits to backstage areas including the scenic and carpentry shops, wig shop, costume shop, armory, performers’ rehearsal and dressing rooms, and more. The tour begins and ends in the Met lobby and runs for approximately seventy-five minutes.

Tours, which will be offered throughout the Met Opera’s season, cost $35 for the general public and $25 for members, students, and groups of 10 or more. Reservations can be made online, by speaking to the call center at 212.362.6000, or by visiting the box office. For up-to-date call center and box office hours, visit the Met Opera website. For any questions, please email publictours@metopera.org. Group tour requests cannot be made online and must be done via email.

You won’t want to miss this unique opportunity to see how the magic of the opera is made, and, of course, you'll want to experience the magic of an opera performance, too. Check out what's on the stage this season at the Met Opera, as well as events across the Lincoln Center Campus, including tours of Lincoln Center
