DSNY Issues ‘Winter Operations Advisory’ 12.13.20

NOTE: In the event of a snow storm, Outdoor Dining will need to cease!

Please see below for a "Winter Operations Advisory" from the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY):

Due to the chance of winter weather in the forecast, the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has issued a Winter Operations Advisory. The Department’s snow fighting equipment is ready for any winter weather coming our way. This is not a Snow Alert which would require that Open Restaurants cease roadway dining, but a Snow Alert may come depending on how the forecast changes.

The Department is coordinating with other City agencies on snow clearing protocol in accordance with each agency’s written snow plan. All relevant city agencies have been notified and the Department will continue to monitor forecasts as the snow event approaches.

Snow Alert vs. Winter Operations Advisory

To better allow for continued operations for Open Restaurant participants, this year, the Department will issue both Snow Alerts and Winter Operations Advisories. The Department will use its snow fighting equipment in both situations, as needed.

The Department will issue a Winter Operation Advisory when some snow, ice or winter weather is in the forecast, generally under an inch of total accumulation. During a Winter Operations Advisory, winter weather is possible, and the Department is prepared to respond. While roadway dining may continue, Open Restaurants should take steps to protect patrons, staff and property. The Department may spread salt and/or brine on the roadway to prevent freezing.

The Department will issue a Snow Alert when an inch or more of snow or ice is in the forecast. During a Snow Alert, roadway dining MUST CLOSE by the time indicated in the Alert. Furniture should be removed or secured, and electric heaters should be removed. Remove the tops of structures if possible. If the forecast calls for 12” of snow or more, remove or consolidate structures, including barriers, to take up as little space as possible. This makes plowing easier and protects property. The City will announce when the Snow Alert is over and roadway dining may safely resume.
