DSNY's Commercial Waste Zones
Oct 25, 2017The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is beginning a multi-year process of transforming the current open-market commercial waste system into a system of commercial waste zones. This means dividing the city into geographic zones which carters would bid on to operate within. Beyond the establishment of the geographic zones, the many other details of the system have not yet been developed. The recent announcement begins what will likely be a 6 or 7 year process, including the first step of working closely with all stakeholders to develop an implementation plan. They have hired Public Works Partners to engage business owners and managers to participate in 90-minute focus group discussions about their experience with their current waste haulers, and overall opinions of the current system. Feedback from these discussions will shape the zone models so that it is an efficient working system for both businesses and carters.
DSNY is looking for business owners and managers from the following types of establishments: Retail Putrescible Businesses (restaurants, grocery stores, delis, etc.) and Retail Non-Putrescible Businesses (retail that does not sell food).
