This Sunday, March 14, is New York City’s official day of remembrance of the COVID-19 pandemic, marking one year since the city’s first reported COVID-related death. In honor of those lost to the pandemic, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts will present two tributes on Sunday.

At 12:00pm, Lincoln Center will present a collaboration with the Young People’s Chorus of New York City (YPC). Specially filmed outdoors on Lincoln Center’s campus, the YPC will perform a memorial tribute of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” The performance will be available to stream on Lincoln Center’s Facebook page and Youtube channel.

And, for 30 minutes beginning at 8:00pm, Lincoln Center will light hundreds of candles surrounding their fountain and dim surrounding campus lights, offering silence and honor for the approximately 30,000 New Yorkers lost thus far to the virus. They will broadcast a 10-minute moment of silence from the memorial, live on Lincoln Center’s Facebook page. The memorial will be viewable from the street and the candles will remain lit overnight, though campus will remain closed to visitors.

Additionally, the City is honoring those lost with a memorial event that will be streamed Sunday evening at 7:45pm. New Yorkers are invited to share stories, photos and videos of people they’ve lost via submission entries or social media.

We hope these tributes will provide some comfort as we collectively grieve for those lost on this somber anniversary.
