New Exhibit, Extended Hours and In-Person Programming at AFAM

Exciting things are happening at the American Folk Art Museum (AFAM)! As of Tuesday, November 2, AFAM expanded its visitor hours to six days a week: Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30am – 6:00pm. The Museum’s updated hours coincide with the final weeks of American Weathervanes: The Art of the Winds, as well as the opening of their new exhibition: Six Decades Collecting Self-Taught Art: Revealing a Diverse and Rich Artistic Narrative.

Six Decades Collecting Self-Taught Art, the inaugural exhibition in the Audrey B. Heckler Gallery, conveys the museum’s deep commitment to studying, preserving and sharing the complexity, ingenuity and historical relevance of self-taught art across time, cultures and place. This snapshot of the Museum’s collection shows how habits and changes in daily life, culture and technology can provoke artistic responses and practices. The exhibition includes masterworks by Martín Ramírez, Barbus Müller (a.k.a. Antoine Rabany), and Achilles B. Rizzoli. The exhibition opens on Thursday, November 11 and runs through Sunday, January 2.

Additionally, select in-person programs and exhibition tours are resuming this week! On the first Wednesday of each month from 1:00pm – 2:00pm, enjoy jazz guitarist Bill Wurtzel and guests play standards from the American Songbook on the Museum’s Plaza. The next Jazz+Wednesdays event is Wednesday, December 1. This Saturday, November 5, join a free tour of American Weathervanes: The Art of the Winds from 1:00pm – 2:00pm. And on Wednesday, November 17, learn about the surfaces and technical analysis of weathervanes from conservation scientist Dr. Jennifer L. Mass during an exhibition walkthrough from 2:00pm – 2:45pm. Tickets for the walkthrough are $10 for the general public and $8 for members, students, seniors and artists. AFAM is also offering private, guided tours of exhibitions for adult and school groups, and the Museum is continuing its virtual programming. Click here to view all upcoming programs at AFAM.
