Water Main Break - Week 2

Dear Lincoln Square BID Members and Friends:

As we reach the end of the second week following the water main break, which happened on Monday, January 13, we thought we would provide the latest update that we have received on the ongoing repair work and its impact on Lincoln Square.

We were notified by Con Edison (steam) that they are continuing to work on 62nd Street between Broadway and Columbus Avenue, replacing the 8" steam main that runs down the south sidewalk (~280'), which was damaged during the water main break. The repair work will be happening around the clock until Con Edison has the main tied in and re-energized. Con Edison anticipates completing the work on the evening of Monday, January 27, but it may take longer. Once the steam main is replaced, Con Edison has indicated there will be some additional work on Broadway and 62nd Street in order to reinforce the steam main on Broadway.

One block over, Con Edison apparently has unrelated electric work taking place on a vault on 62nd Street between Columbus Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue. Though less intrusive, this adds to the construction and sidewalk activity as repair work continues. Eventually, a team will return to 62nd Street between Broadway and Columbus Avenue area to do work on a service box damaged during the water main break, which Con Edison crews cannot currently access due to the other repair work.

West 62nd Street between Broadway and Columbus Avenue remains closed to vehicular traffic. The sidewalk on the north side of 62nd street is open to pedestrians.  The sidewalk on the south side of 62nd Street, in front of the Allegro and alongside TD Bank, also remains closed although residents can access residential buildings. The sidewalk on the west side of Broadway between 61st Street and 62nd Street remains closed. TD Bank, TD Ameritrade, New York Sports Club, WeWork tenants, including Hubble, and AAA remain closed. TKTS, Harmony Cleaners, The Rubenstein Atrium and Rosa Mexicano are open. Melissa's Gourmet Deli on Broadway, though difficult to get to, is also open! Bernadette Nation, the Executive Director of Emergency Response & Intergovernmental Services from the NYC Department of Small Business Services, continues to try and assist those businesses that have been impacted.

We have stationed our Public Safety Officers at key locations, including 62nd Street and Broadway to make sure that pedestrians are aware of street and sidewalk closures, and to assist as always with directions. Our Clean Team is making sure that the district remains litter free. Impacted businesses and properties can visit the Comptroller's website for more information, including eligibility, on filing a claim.

Today marks the end of the second week that the Lincoln Square BID is unable to get back into our office. Our staff is working remotely nearby with a fabulous view of Lincoln Square. You can reach us at info@lincolnsquarebid.org or at 212.581.3774 if you have questions, concerns, or updated information.

Sincerely,
